Overview
Gen Z mockery of their Millennial older siblings is nothing new. This month, it’s about the Millennial Burger Joint aesthetic. For those of us in Australia, Grill’d is the most typical example. Think exposed brick, metal chairs, fairy lights, and mason jars.
This comes along with the catchphrase “Just Two Guys With a Crazy Idea” and the parody song “We Will Never Die” by comedian Kyle Gordon who takes on popular Millennial music, mocking the Millennial obsession with songs about youth and living and emulating Mumford and Son, the Lumineers, Of Monsters and Men et. Al.
The Response
This has spiralled into calling out all things Millennial. Like weddings:
Interior Decor:
And fashion:
Application
This trend highlights the never-ending cycle of fashion, mirroring philosophies of the age that come and go (cf. 1 Corinthians 1:20). It also speaks to the felt need to fit in and belong with those around us as we label what is “in” and “out”. This speaks to a natural desire for connection that Jesus satisfies, as God adopts us (Romans 8:15) regardless of our social capital (Galatians 3:28). Of course, Kyle Gordon’s song “We Will Never Die” also pokes fun at the felt invincibility of youth, while ironically singing a core Christian truth of eternal life in Jesus.
